For many of the the nearly 200 attendees at the February Monthly Meeting, Oleg Atbashian confirmed what they had been suspecting already--America is well on its way down the road toward Socialism. Oleg, a former Soviet propagandist, finally understood the inevitable failure of the nanny state that promised equal economic rights (a guaranteed job, education, housing, health care, etc.) when he awoke to the hypocrisy and ultimate corruption that ensues when those under Socialist rule are equal, but some (the political class) are more equal than others (the Proletariat). He was excited to move to America where an individual is free to achieve anything they desire, and not be told where to live, where to work, and how much they're allowed to earn. When he first moved to America, he felt like he had been sent forward in time, but now he feels like he's moving back in time to his former days in the Soviet Union. The only difference is that the Statists in the USSR were defending their monopoly of power, while the Statists here are on offense, trying to gain as much power as possible. This important difference was a point that was totally misconstrued by the Easton Patch reporter who attended the meeting and wrote the following in his follow-up article:
And while Atbashian clearly had no love for the old Soviet system, he seemed to almost compliment it for doing certain things better.
For example, he argued that schools in the Soviet Union gave children "three times" the knowledge that American public schools do. And he pointed to certain things -- "depravity in the media," "new age religions," "union strikes" -- that weren't allowed in communist Russia but exist in America.
